Metaballs

Each ball contributes an inverse-square field to every pixel. Where the sum crosses a threshold you get surface — so two blobs stop being two blobs as soon as they get close enough.

Turn Clump down and they drift apart into separate drops; turn it up and the whole field collapses into one mass. Leave the cursor and its ball goes back to circling on its own.
